FAO

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization

Tasha Zuzalek, Director-General

The primary goal of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is to defeat world-wide hunger by improving agricultural productivity, bettering the lives of rural populations, and contributing to the growth of the world economy.  In function, the FAO provides support which allows people and nations to better help themselves; a country which shifts from state to private land ownership may ask for legal advice, for example, or the FAO may provide tools and techniques to a country that wishes to increase its crop yields but which lacks the technical skills.

The WestMUN FAO Committee will tackle a number of issues dealing with World Hunger and Food Availability, including the topic of Land Degradation, which decreases the amount of fertile land available for agriculture, ultimately leading to rising agricultural prices and food availability which is also closely linked with rising poverty levels.  The committee will be in charge of determining how, or even whether, to utilize available land, focusing on an area in Eastern Europe which possesses an enormous amount of unused farmland.

A Full Report from the Director will be available soon!
